The Toshiba Community Group Award recognizes WICC as the outstanding community group in WA that has adopted sound land management practices on public and private land and is working towards sustainable land use and enhancing or protecting an area on behalf of the community.
WICC was successful due to its ability to involve the community in the completion of significant on ground works by:
- The landowners within the catchment who have undertaken activities such as:
- 283.3km of fencing of waterways and remnant vegetation to exclude stock;
- 103 associated stock crossings;
- 95 alternate water points;
- revegetating 225.5 ha of degraded areas with native vegetation;
- establishing 3742 ha of perennial pasture;
- and soil testing and soil health activities.
- These figures are only including work completed since 2003 to July 2008 with more work to be completed soon.

- The commitment of the employees: Lynn Heppell, Upper Hay Project Officer and Elissa Stewart, WINRAP Project Officer, to assist the landowners within the catchment to undertake on ground works through providing incentives, technical advice, and resources.
- The past and present volunteers on the committee who have driven the projects and managed the employees.
- And the Dept of Water and Dept of Agriculture and Food representatives who have assisted WICC undertake these projects.
By winning the National Award 'Toshiba Community Group Award' category WICC is now a finalist in the National Landcare Awards to be announced in Sydney or Canberra next year. WICC will be competing against the winners from the other states for the honour of being the best Community Group in Australia for 2009.
